The tale of two travelers, who saves more money?

Let’s compare two travelers to see who saves more money, we’ll call them Person A (The Points & Miles Guru) and Person B (The Smart Business Owner). Both are business owners who travel 3x per month and both spend about $350 per flight.

Person A spends hundreds of hours researching how to try and “beat” the airlines and hotels with miles and points.  Person A signs up for multiple travel credit cards and outspends their means to hit two separate 60,000 points sign up bonuses. Person A justifies their overspending and racking up debt by saying “I am getting all of this free travel, so it’s worth it”. Sound familiar?

Person A goes to try and redeem their points for “free” travel only to find that they can’t because of blackout dates, or not enough seats at the redemption price they have enough points for.  So they overspend again by redeeming partial points and spending more money.

To give Person A the benefit of the doubt, let’s assume they get a decent redemption value for their 120,000 points at 1.5 cents per point.  Not great but not terrible.

Thus, Person A gets $1,800 of “free” travel that they likely had to spend at least $8,000 on credit cards to achieve and wasted countless hours trying to figure out, of which could have been better spent to better grow their business. Person A’s business is flat that year.

Now let’s look at Person B. Remember, Person B is also a business owner who travels 3x per month and spends about $350 per flight. Person B has never heard of travel credit cards and doesn’t know anything about points and miles.

Person B cares a lot about paying the lowest possible price for every flight they take though, so they use Sky Key to help them achieve this. They’re so busy focusing on growing their business that they don’t have time to try and find travel hacks. Sky Key saves Person B $57 per flight by locking in the lowest price for every flight they take that year.

Thus, Person B saves $2,052 toward their travel. Remember, Person A only saved $1,800 toward travel and wasted hundreds of hours.  Because Person B doesn’t waste hundreds of hours trying to game the points and miles system, their business grows 10x that year. This affords Person B the opportunity to fly first class for all of the next year, while Person A is still trying to figure out how to “game the system” for economy tickets.

This tale reminds me of the great Mark Twain quote that goes: “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”

What’s the lesson here? Paying the lowest possible price for all your flights by using Sky Key will save you more money over time than trying to win an un-winnable game.
